There are all kinds of sewing workshops, and they don’t all serve the same purpose. Before you sign up, it’s worth taking five minutes to answer these seven questions.
1. What’s your starting level?
If you’ve never sewn, look for a beginner workshop that starts with how to thread the machine. If you’ve already sewn something, a project workshop will give you more. A workshop that doesn’t match your level is either too slow or impossible.
2. How many people are in each group?
This is the question that matters most. In a small group, the teacher gets to look at your stitching and your questions are answered on the spot. In a big one, everyone waits their turn. Always ask for the maximum number of places.
3. What exactly will you make?
A good workshop tells you from the start what you’ll sew: a pouch, a bag, a skirt. Knowing the finished piece helps you decide and tells you whether you really fancy it.
4. How long is it and what time does it start?
A three-hour workshop lets you finish a small piece, and a multi-session one allows for something more ambitious. Check that the schedule really works for you, because what you can’t keep up ends up as an empty seat.
5. What’s included and what do you need to bring?
- Whether machines are available or you have to bring your own.
- Whether the fabric and materials are included.
- Whether you need to bring anything specific, like scissors or thread.
6. Who teaches the workshop?
Look for someone who sews and teaches sewing, and who explains with patience. Some schools say who teaches and what their background is: that’s a good sign.
7. What do past participants think?
Reviews and photos of what gets sewn in the workshop say more than any description. If you see well-finished pieces, the method works.
And one extra question: do you fancy it?
A workshop is time for yourself. If reading the description makes you want to sit down at the machine right now, it’s the one for you. If you’re just starting out, you can first read how to start sewing from scratch. And if you’d like to see how we do it, you’ll find all the details in our in-person workshops.
