Satin looks stunning, and that is precisely why it needs looking after well. A poor wash or a blast of the iron can dull its sheen or mark the fabric for good. With these tips, your garments will keep the drape and look they had on the first day. And remember that care depends on the composition: always check the label of your fabric.
Before washing
- Check the composition. Polyester satin is not cared for the same way as silk or acetate satin.
- Test in a hidden spot if in doubt, especially with intense colours.
- Close zips and hooks so they do not snag the fabric.
How to wash it
- By hand or on a delicate cycle, in cold or lukewarm water.
- With a gentle detergent, no bleach or harsh softeners.
- Ideally inside a laundry bag, to protect it from rubbing.
- Without wringing or scrubbing. Press gently and rinse well.
How to dry it
- Lay it flat or hang it in the shade, out of direct sun.
- Avoid the tumble dryer, which can dull the sheen and crease the fabric.
- Do not wring it out hard. Wrap it in a towel to remove the excess water.
How to iron it
Iron on the wrong side, at a low temperature and, if possible, with a thin cloth between the iron and the fabric. Some satins, especially polyester ones, are damaged by high heat. Test first in a hidden spot. If you want to know more about how it behaves, see how to sew satin without it sliding away.
How to store it
Hang it on a hanger or fold it without squashing, ideally with tissue paper between the folds. Avoid storing it damp, and keep it away from surfaces that could snag it.
The most common mistakes
- Using hot water or a strong spin.
- Ironing on high heat or without a cloth.
- Spraying it with perfume or deodorant, which can leave stains.
- Leaving it near Velcro or jewellery that snags.
