Tutorials are wonderful. Thanks to them, half the world has learned to thread a machine. But they have a limit, and almost all of us notice it late. These are the signs that you have reached it.
Signs that the tutorial has no more to give you
You watch the same video three times and still do not understand the step. If you have already repeated it and the doubt remains, the problem is not that you are not paying attention: the video is not answering your situation.
Your machine does not behave like the one in the video. Another tension, another foot, another needle. What works on one does not always work on yours.
Your fabric is not the one in the example. A finer, thicker or stretchier fabric changes everything.
The result comes out “almost right”. That is the hardest thing to correct without someone seeing it, because you do not even know what to look for (first go over the most common mistakes, in case it is one of them).
You have left more than one project half-finished. When a doubt stalls you, everything ends up shelved.
What tutorials do well
- They teach specific techniques step by step.
- You can watch them as many times as needed.
- They are free and available at any hour.
Use them for that, and combine them with solid basics: knowing how to read a pattern and what its symbols mean avoids many doubts. To adjust, diagnose and correct on your piece you need something else.
What to do when you get stuck
- Write down the exact question. “My sleeve will not work” is vague; “the cap is 2 cm too big” is a question that can be answered.
- Take a photo or a video of what is happening. It helps anyone who wants to guide you.
- Ask someone who sews. A friend, a community, a teacher.
- Find a place where people can watch you sew. A single correction session is worth more than ten videos.
When you reach that point, sometimes what is missing is someone watching you sew. You will find the information in our in-person workshops.
