A sewing pattern is not a rule to follow to the letter, but a starting point. With it you decide what the garment looks like, what fabric it is made from and to what measurements, and you can repeat it until it turns out just as you want.
1. You create your own style
With the same pattern you can make very different garments by changing the length, the neckline, a detail or the colour. If you don’t yet know what your style is, start with this exercise to create your own style by sewing your clothes.
2. You choose the fabrics
When you shop, you get whatever the shop has. With a pattern you pick the fabric, the texture and the colour, and the garment changes completely. Before deciding, see which fabric to choose and how many metres you need.
3. You perfect it again and again
A pattern can be repeated. The first time helps you understand the garment, the second to adjust what you don’t like, and the third comes out almost perfect. It is the fastest way to improve at sewing.
4. You choose your size and adjust it
Every pattern comes with its size chart, and with your measurements taken properly you can pick the one that fits you best or combine one for the waist and another for the hips. If you are unsure, here is how to choose your size in a pattern. That way the garment adapts to your body, not the other way round.
5. You understand how a garment is made
Following a pattern teaches you how a garment is built: where the darts go, how a shoulder is closed, what a lining does. If you are curious about what is behind it, read what pattern making is and why it changes your garments.
6. You save money and reduce waste
Sewing only what you need, with just the right amount of fabric, avoids purchases you won’t use and makes better use of materials.
